There are lots of people I’d like to thank for their encouragement and guidance.

I started writing during Queensland’s first lockdown (when people did things like try new hobbies) and finished the manuscript the following year while caring for a toddler and newborn with a compromised immune system. During the pandemic, I listened to countless hours of podcasts, including every episode of Chat10Looks3, Sentimental Garbage, Shameless, Too Peas, Stories Behind the Story and How To Fail with Elizabeth Day. These podcasts kept me interested and engaged and inspired to write throughout that strange and stressful period.

Pete, you were the first person to ‘discover’ my writing after you kept walking into the room to see me guiltily slamming my laptop shut and asked what I was doing. When I sheepishly said I was, ‘Doing some writing’, you responded with enthusiasm and support, as you always do. Thank you for everything. You’ll always be the person I want to tell things to first. Good things, bad things and everything in between.

Showing someone a story that you’ve made up in your head and had the nerve to put on the page is no small thing. Thanks to my family and friends who read early drafts and gave such kind feedback: Peter Williams, Hayley Polkinghorne, Jessica Schaffer, Georgina Elliott, Jenny Rutherford, Michael Rutherford, John Rutherford, Bernadette Williams and Brian Williams.

Jess, thanks for reading multiple drafts and for thirty years of friendship and book recommendations. You’re the most voracious reader I know.

Hayley, thanks for introducing me to all my favourite podcasts, also for reading multiple drafts and making me laugh every time we talk. A huge thank you for suggesting I get the manuscript professionally edited. It was the best advice.

Alex Nahlous, I contacted you, out of the blue, for early editorial guidance. Thanks for seeing exactly what the story needed, for generously reviewing additional scenes and encouraging me to submit the manuscript.

I’m very grateful to Text Publishing for supporting young-adult and children’s writing through the Text Prize and bringing this book to life. Special thanks to Jane Pearson for your insight, your thoughtful comments and for patiently explaining parenthetical clauses to me. I have loved working together and this book is significantly better thanks to you.

I learnt to write by reading. Thanks Mum and Dad for bringing me up in a house of books and sharing your love of stories. Most of all, thanks for your unwavering love and support.

Finally, to Scarlett, April and Tom: watching you grow and explore the world has made me think differently and more creatively. Reading to you is one of my favourite things to do. It’s one of the rare times that I really don’t mind when you constantly ask for ‘one more’.
